we liked so much the output from pol004 that we decided to put together another split ep. this time with house heads ewan jansen and derek carr. artwork comes from brazil based visual artist beatriz corneiro.

iron curtis has felt like a polytone artist for quite a while now. he recently delivered a breathtaking remix for matthias vogt, and shared a split ep with the man himself, terrence dixon. hes also played several label nights, but indeed unwind is his first very own ep on polytone. the opening track riders is our floor filler here. a subsonic bass experience of the more intensive kind. its a pure groover, with a surprisingly long lasting breakdown that never lacks on intensity. cream on the a2 is a stellar ambient joint, with rhythmic elements and cosmic pads. on the flip we have the title track, unwind, with an unconventional basic groove, bleepy touches and trademark 707 drum machine sounds. pure and stunning deepness. the final track is a remix from force/emerge and leads unwind into techno territory. polytone stands for diversity, and again demonstrates the labels vision of versatility here.

this split lp compiles the output of two closely related bands from, as suggested by the title, the hot, humid and (at the time) socially isolated city of brisbane, australia – an unlikely location for synth-pop and new wave music during the 1980s. prod & the moonbaby were a high school duo experimenting with tape loops, cheap electronics and primitive sampling.. the result is certainly lo-fi, light-hearted and naive, but also charming and the music belies the young age of the musicians. ash in october was in many ways a logical progression of prod & the moonbaby and shared some of the same personnel, but also added some new wave influence through extra instrumentation and more serious, considered lyrics. most of these tracks have never been heard before outside a handful of self-distributed tapes and this compilation was compiled over several years by the artists in collaboration with hysteric and nick mariano (crispy nuggets).

the unblock label hits its seventh release with a split ep featuring rising talents tato and tijn. the sound on the 12inch fits right in with the previous transmissions from tuccillo, tomoki tamura and more besides, taking a quirky approach to stripped down house and techno dynamics to create intriguing party fodder for inquisitive dancers. tatos estic does a wondrous job of twisting up tribal percussion with a snaking minimal groove, while lusyourmaind brings a cheeky housey shuffle to the proceedings while keeping things a little mysterious in the same breath. tijns stranger things is a light and airy minimal house jam that contrasts neatly with the hook running through the centre of piano tool.

second release for la chinerie s comic sans imprint. for this one we invited two brothers antoine & matthieu for a split work dedicated to the famous tekken game. first side is antoine s which only ability at the game was to spam his opponent with the now very famous -dragon kick- technique second side is matthieu s (aka $turmtruppen 1917) who has always been fascinated by yoshimitsu s hability to commit suicide during a fight.

dalmata daniel continue with their inspired pairing of sonics and personalities on their seventh release (1st part of their split series) to date courtesy of dutch producer betonkust and budapest-based hardware techno fiend Új bála. as much as both differ in their geographical roots – holland and hungary, respectively, at first glance (or listen), their sound also ventures into different sonic territories. 1080p and pinkman-affiliate betonkust delivers vintage-tinged electronics – most prominently on his -ferenc s escape- – while Új bála digs deeper into the basement and unravels his analogue acid and badass beats. his -the piggy-bank deal- even touches upon oriental flavours. on the other hand, the music on this ep is buoyant and joyful, a welcome antidote to the gloom and doom that s not only been prevalent in the world around us, but also in too much music of the last few years.

gilgamesh was an ancient hero who stood in the middle during the conflict between the good and the bad side. the epic of gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient mesopotamia. dating from the third dynasty of ur (circa 2100 bc), it is often regarded as the first great work of literature. the record is split up into 2 moods. there is -fire- on the a-side and -water- on the b-side.

(for the use of these hidden hands music in the brutal raw worldwide trailer). now, from their headquarters at londons live music epicentre village underground, they have launched their latest project: the research label. this new label will showcase the artists they represent by challenging them to push the boundaries of their production process to new levels.

it’s time to celebrate, nothing less than 50 releases spread along 17 years of existence. for this very reason we have planned this awesome remixes pack, split in two ep’s based in the limited clear vinyl pattern series originals.
the second ep features shlømo’s modern approach to textures, rolling subbass, shuffled grooves, micro drones and lush pads comprise the equation. maestro donato dozzy approaches color in an old school way, vintage grooves, acid lines and rude sound mixed with resonant sweeps and sci-fi paraphernalia. chevel offers his own personal view on form, mixing pads and atmospheres with 80’s flavored melodies and weird beats ending in industrial madness, a very unique version.

following the success of the last split release from label bosses adam shelton and subb-an, one records deliver a heavy-weight remix package of self control/ only now from perlon favourites melchior productions ltd aka thomas melchior and akufen aka horror inc. a standout release for the label, original tracks self control and only now are masterfully reworked by melchior and akufen who both utilise the distinct vocals from isis salam to deliver two monumental tracks. one records have enjoyed forming a bond with melchior this year, inviting him to play at label showcases in barcelona for off sonar and gotwood festival in the uk. they look forward to inviting both melchior and akufen to upcoming label parties.

with its sixth release new york trax continues the mission of highlighting the jewels of the new york underground. liquid asset is a philadelphia-born brooklyn-based hardware virtuoso who has made a name for herself by virtue of appearances on labels such as e-saggila s summer isle brooklyn s own primitive languages jacktone and acid etch where she has recently delivered a furious 7- split with isabella. liquid asset built her own 808 and 303 clones by hand. the modified 303 is particularly audible in the opening track of the record -ephemeral nights- where she did not waste time on an intro and went straight to creating a sonic pandemonium by blending an airhorn sound with frenzy acid basslines and a hardcore-leaning 909 kick. -contact- is a merciless creature of the night with its relentless dark groove building up throughout this composition cannot easily be classified as a representation of any particular genre. -controlperception- opens the b side. here liquid asset plays with a cheerful acid line over a dreamy landscape often punctured with bleeping sounds. finally in -forgetmenot- two opposite sounding basslines intertwine creating a minimal yet very capturing composition to close this one of a kind record.

this is the first 12 inch from luke jenner’s first solo project since his infamous new york band the rapture split up. very often first releases are like a statement. both sides of this 12 represent a side of what meditation tunnel is about: epic and melodic on dreamsequence, psychedelic and hypnotic on sunrise. mixed by joakim, whom luke shares a studio with in brooklyn.

london based electronic music label khemia records announces its sixth split release vinyl ep. the second edition of the magnum opus series on khemia records features a new production from berlin based modular powerhouse blush response alongside an electrifying collaboration between years of denial, who have previously released on oliver ho’s death and leisure label and russian techno auteur alexey volkov (jealous god). on the solar side blush response delivers ‘you will cry out in grief’ a maelstrom of industrial electronics seethes under a furious barrage of complex rhythms, as evolving symmetries disperse into incandescence. on the lunar side years of denial meet alexey volkov in the first of a new collaborative series - ‘confess’. barkosina hanusova’s voice ricochets against caustic snares as she intones a fetishistic ritual of contorted flesh and altered states.

in 1973, emi records nigeria released the 45 rpm disc fuel for love b/w soundway, credited to a mysterious band called wrinkar experience. the record was a finely-crafted gem of pop-rock and funky soul as had never before been heard coming out of the countryÆs nascent rock scene, and it ended up being the biggest selling nigerian single up until that point. the success of wrinkar experience effectively demonstrated that was a market for homegrown pop and rock, and sent record labels scrambling to sign similar bands, kicking off the nigerian rock revolution that is still being celebrated and discovered by new generations today. but while wrinkar experience launched the movement, the group itself would be short-lived: after another hit single in 1973, the bands frontman danie ian split for a solo career. the remaining principal players in the group cameroonian musicians ginger forcha and edjoo jacques racine tried to keep the wrinkar name going before giving it up and rebranding themselves as rock town express. rock town expresss debut lp funky makossa was recorded in 1974 for arc records, the cutting-edge studio and label established in lagos by english drum legend ginger baker. the album showcased in long format the qualities that had only been hinted at on the wrinkar experience singles: bright, confident pop melodies, articulate lyrics, and darkly potent funk-rock. comb & razor sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of funky makossa, featuring the seven tracks from the original release, plus i am a natural man and i dont want to know, from wrinkar experiences seldom-heard third and final single.

having previously impressed for burek and five fold separately, berlin based italian duo autre and two thou teamed up for a split record on croatian fields & forests imprint. the record showcases a nice combination of eclectic rhythms, funky basses and spacey solos but despite its club signature and retro-futuristic vibe, solar society is still more of a cosmic porch burner rather than a dancefloor banger.

dj octopus has been busy in the last few years, appearing often alongside steve murphy on labels like love notes, chiwax, hot haus and shall not fade. on this new double pack for house crime he goes it alone, bringing the kind of raw, off-kilter but ultimately fun vibe that the label seems to plump for. born in 86 is an absolute head driller of a track, looped up but utterly addictive, while diastemia offers a very different kind of disco-infused groove. this personality split runs throughout, ensuring there s never a dull moment diving into any of these sides of wax. check the toy is mine if you need proof that octopus knows how to throw it down.

three years in, blackhall & bookless jaunt label is becoming a serious force for forward thinking, fractured techno exploration. on this split ep with chad, the duo take the a-side and present two different versions of links. the battle rework is a tense and dramatic tumble through dub techno soundscapes, while the bleak remix pares the elements down to a more focused, minimalist thrum. chad presents a wholly different vibe on the flip, using rich, warm synthesiser tones to draw you in to afters, and then scenery regular asok takes up remix duties on the track with an immersive version that borders on breakbeat.

london s weekend circuit imprint returns with a 5 track ep from label owner michael wells entitled three marks of existence. the ep marks michael s debut on the label and is a signifier of his future direction as a producer - meditative, tense, unfolding electronics and monochrome ambient environments inform this release. the deepest of deep space is contained within ep opener antecedent , an almost menacing, enveloping track that engulfs us during it s 5 minutes or so of existence. verge follows and is driven by speaker puncturing taut, tribal drum programming and swirling satellite sounds, creeping further into the nexus. subtly heavy indeed. ‘three marks of existence mines an altogether different vein, an epic, widescreen vision of downtempo electro that is damaged, on the fritz, but containing enough melodic beauty to retain hope. souls in the machines. weekend circuit acolytes yyyy return to the scene of the crime with a monolithic remix of verge that opens the second side of this ep, showcasing their unique style and interpretation of the original mix, and following on from their previous split ep with stanislav tolkachev and their own ep ‘intention of mortal’. ‘ilmatar leaves us out and leads you into the cold night, the final transmission from the ‘three marks of existence signal. fierce drums punctuate the night sky and barren landscapes while somewhere deep inside, memories are remembered. equal parts thought provoking and anxious, the perfect end point for what will undoubtedly be a formative benchmark in the weekend circuit canon.
